Action
Figure Collection
Everybody has a childhood toy that they
think of nostalgically. For some it may have been Model Cars, their Big
Wheel, or their GI Joe or Barbie collection. For me it was Mego action
figures. When I was growing up, my action figures were easily my favorite
toy. They were like crack, I had to have them. Mego's tagline for
these 8 inch figures were "Collect Them All". Unfortunately for my
parents, I tried. It was impossible to pass the display rack in Korvette's
or the local drugstore without stopping and whining until my mom submitted to my
pestering. The World's Greatest Super Hero's were my favorites, but Star
Trek, Planet of the Apes, Starsky and Hutch, and the original Action Jackson
lines were all the subjects of my desire. Christmas and birthdays were
when I got the bigger ticket items, like the playsets and vehicles. I may have
asked for and gotten figures from the other lines, but they were few and far
between. Mego made Pirates, Knights, Mad Monsters, CHiPs, Happy
Days, Wizard of Oz, The Waltons and more.
The Mego Museum is the best resource on
the Internet for learning more about these great figures, vehicles and playsets.
I have been rebuilding my collection recently,
and I must admit that the desire for these figures has never left me. My
brother Michael has been suffering the guilt of throwing my collection out when
he was a teenager. I dedicate this page to him, and forgive. I now
have the joy of trying to "Collect Them All" again.
My Collection
I started out trying to recreate my childhood
collection. I have done a pretty good job, but I am finding that things
like the playsets don't have the same appeal. This is probably a good
thing because I don't have the room to display them, or the money to buy them.
I collect loose figures, and they do not have to be all original. Their
are great resources for reproduction items, such as
Dr. Mego, and a thriving group of
talented people doing custom work. I do have a fascination with some of the
vehicles, and have found some great recent toy vehicles that are perfect for
Mego's. I have photo's of my Mego's here, although it is not complete.
I will be updating this album when the pieces are in display condition.
The Traveling Mego Hulk
Combining my adult passion for digital
photography and my childhood passion for Mego action figures, I have created a
page dedicated to The Traveling Mego Hulk. I bring
my Hulk with me when I go on vacation and keep him in the car with me, so I can
take pictures of him wherever I go. Others are invited to
participate. All you need is a Mego Hulk and a camera. Check out the
results so far.
